Martha, housebound and chatting to her budgie, and Amie with her handed-down family Bible, are neighbours in a Glasgow tenement, each hemmed in and with very different memories of the past, Martha's dominated by her husband Jack and a sense of loss, which she confronts with humour and wry resilience. A colourful array of characters, past and present, heighten the emotional impact of the play – which has been described as a hymn to aspects of Glasgow itself. I Didn’t Always Live Here was first performed in the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre on 18th April 1967, with the following cast:
